Only citizens born in the U.S. can be President

Akhil Reed Amar, looks at the limitations on naturalized citizens for holding office, specifically the President. The Constitution states that only citizens born in the U.S. are eligible to be President of the U.S., as he says. But those American citizens who happen to have been born abroad to non-American parents — and who later choose to become “naturalized” American citizens — are not the full legal equals of those of us born in the U.S. True, naturalized Americans have always been allowed to serve as cabinet secretaries, Supreme Court justices, senators and governors. And at the founding, anyone already a citizen could be president, regardless of birthplace. (Alexander Hamilton, for example, though born in the West Indies, was fully eligible to serve as president under the Constitution he himself helped draft.) But modern-day naturalized citizens are barred from the presidency simply because they were born in the wrong place to the wrong parents.

I choose this article because as long as you can go through the history of America, it is all built off of Immigrants. I think that it the issue with immigration and being the president is total nonsense. Almost everyone in this country is either a first generation immigrant or their family is. If you are qualified, it should not matter where you are born. The current president we have an office challenge the ex-president's birthplace and none of it were correct. We are as Americans should challenge this in the Constitution. The Constitution in a whole needs to be debated, renegotiated, and updated because the world is in a different place and time. Knowing the history of this country is long written in the Constitution makes you question why do they have this in there? Ask yourself what they are trying to prevent with this being that no one in this country is 100% American. Throughout time races have mixed rather it be consensual or raped. Living in New York City which is called the melting pot just take a look you have people from all walks of life and from around the world. If a child is born to foreign parents lives in this country excels in school and wants to become part of the government and become president, why couldn't he? He is not his parents he may not have even been to the country or island's family has come. The United States is what he or she calls home, but because of where this person's parents were born they have no way of showing their gift to read this great country.

  1. I agree with you, I think that America is characterized by immigrants. If a naturalized citizen has the education needed, and the capacity to be a president, I don't see why can't it be. This person could do well too or better than those considered native Americans.
