The Legislative branch is entrusted with making all laws for the country and is composed of two branches: the House of Representatives and the Senate. Representatives are drawn based upon the population of the state. Larger states with larger populations have more representatives. Also if the population of the state increases past a certain point it will gain more representatives (or lose them if the population decreases). Representatives are drawn from different districts drawn up by the states who also control the laws for voting in their respective states. All bills for raising revenue are supposed to originate with the House since it is the more democratic branch of government. Because of its size the position of a Speaker for the House is created as well. The Senate is composed of two senators from each state regardless of size. This was intended as a compromise to give smaller states more equality in government. Senators were originally chosen by the state legislature, and not by the people directly, that lasted until the Progressive era in 1913. In order for proposed legislation to become law it must pass through both houses of Congress and be approved by the president. The president can veto laws, but the Congress can override the veto if it gets a 2/3 majority in both houses.

I chose this because so many people focus on Donald Trump and the way he carries on as the President of the United States. We as Americans should focus more on the house of representatives, Senate, and the Congress to make an impact on the laws in this country. Despite the president having veto power, we need to elect the right people to our local offices so we can have a better voice on the hill. There are so many different issues going on in this country right now. The racial issue that has never gone away, The deferred action for childhood arrivals better known as D.A.C.A., immigration, and healthcare. These problems affect everyone in this country but me being a man of color and I come from a family that was deeply rooted in the civil rights movement so the law and how things run this country I was taught to pay very close attention to. We all need to get out and vote and start from the grassroots level our neighbourhoods our Congressman, all senators to affect our futures. This issue has been going on since the Constitution was created, and now things written in the Constitution that has never changed. The right to vote as change throughout the years with pretty much everyone except men and women with felonies can vote. The voting rights act should be permanent, but unfortunately, it goes up for debate every few years this is something that a lot of people might not be aware of and need to be because at any given time there is a possibility that it could be stricken down. The majority of people in this country are caught up in the hamster wheel of life pay your bills feed your family will work and go to school. So many laws are being added and taken away that can impact all of our lives in this country, so we need to come together as one and fight for all.
